Donald Trump would like you to think that he’s concerned about the Rule of Law but he’s only concerned about his rule over America.

California Governor Gavin Newsom filed a federal lawsuit against President Donald Trump for deploying 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles without the state's consent, calling it an unconstitutional violation of the 10th Amendment. The lawsuit argues that Trump overstepped his authority by invoking military power during immigration protests. California contends that the move escalated tensions rather than calming them and that federal law requires the governor’s approval for such deployment, which was not given. This marks the first instance since 1965 of a president sending a state's National Guard over the objections of its governor.

  It emphasizes the importance of the nation and national identity, often with a focus on racial purity or superiority. [✓] This is obvious to anybody following the news.

• Militarism:

  Fascism typically promotes military strength and expansionism, viewing war as a means to achieve national greatness. [✓] Trump is going to have a parade on his birthday and has overused the military in California.

• Dictatorial Leadership:

  Fascist regimes often have a charismatic leader who exerts absolute control over the government and the people. [✓] This is obvious also.

• Suppression of Opposition:

  Fascism uses force and propaganda to silence dissent and maintain power. [✓] Trump has threatened to arrest Gavin Newsom

• Cult of Personality:

  The leader is often portrayed as a divine or heroic figure, with a strong emphasis on loyalty and obedience. [✓] I don’t understand why people look up to Trump, but the Republican Party is nothing but a cult.

• Economic Control:

  Fascist states often exert significant control over the economy, prioritizing national self-sufficiency and military preparedness. [✓] Again, this is obvious.

My Globe and Mail cartoons are drawn 4–5 days in advance due to the production schedule, which can make it tough to stay timely.

This one was sketched on Wednesday, approved Thursday, inked Friday — and didn’t appear until today. It forces some creative gymnastics, but honestly, it’s fun.

I really enjoy working for The Globe and Mail. Having an employer who treats you with respect and doesn’t gaslight you every day makes all the difference — unlike my experience at The Washington Post.
